Smith and Nephew (S+N) is a leading international company engaged in the development and marketing of medical devices. futurespace designed new premises for S+N that consolidated a number of business groups and provided a new, bigger warehouse and laboratory training facility.
The workplace includes general office functions flexible enough to accommodate the needs of varying teams and training facilities with an adjoining staff and visitor gathering space/café. Also part of the workplace is a state of the art high tech dry lab workshop kitted out for the purpose of training surgeons and the S+N sales teams.
The workshop provides real time video links to doctor’s surgeries so that a Smith and Nephew expert can instruct a surgeon directly during a procedure, facilitating global training and reducing the cost and environmental impact of air travel.
The design concept is about a new direction for the design of healthcare – there is both warmth and ‘cleanliness’ in the materiality of the physical environment. These design concepts are aligned with the progressive nature of S+N’s business. S+N’s own historical xrays were discovered by the futurespace team and used in environmental graphics to signify the transparency of the business’s procedures and corporate responsibility.
