Henry Davis York's workplace overhaul is a seamless blend of Art Deco symmetry with modern, contemporary design
—
The biggest challenge this project presented was how to integrate a new fitout that was fresh and modern into an existing fitout that was traditional and “Art Deco” in look and feel. Heritage issues also needed to be addressed as there were a number of areas within the fitout that were ‘listed’ and could not be modified or renovated. futurespace’s strategy was to use some of the Art Deco language and details found in the original ground floor foyer and other areas of the building (ie hexagonal patterns) and reinterpret these in a modern, contemporary way.
Elements such as carpet tile and wallpaper were selected for their Art Deco influence, as were the bronze mirror, reflective pendant lights and the colour palette. Black, cream and olive are the main colours used, with the green being both a historical and legal reference (ie: inspired by the law books in HDY’s extensive library).
The project involved replanning the client floor whilst the HDY team remained in occupation to include training facilities and to increase the number of meeting rooms. The heritage listed York room was re-invigorated to acknowledge its history and was replanned into a more functional environment.
Kitchen facilities were upgraded to accommodate modern business practices and acoustics were addressed throughout to accommodate the noise created by the existing stone floor. In total fourteen floors of practice and shared services workspace was replanned and redesigned with modern technology discretely incorporated throughout the environment.
