Workplace of the Future

Did we get it right in 2019?

By Angela Ferguson

The DENFAIR 2.0 Virtual Design Festival is running all week this week, with much of the content still available well beyond the festival week.  In 2019 Futurespace created an exhibit for the very first DENFAIR Workspace Precinct, where we attempted to predict the future of workplace design (shown above).

We called this exhibit #Futurework – and took a fairly educated guess (long before the global pandemic) that there would be three main reasons why people would go to a workplace. They were to:

  •  Collaborate – coming together to cocreate, innovate, and team up

  •  Focus – the ability to concentrate, shut out distractions, and do deep work

  • Socialise – create connections with others, promote wellbeing and happiness

Looking back a year later, we stand by this vision.

What will continue to evolve is the emphasis on each of these three activities, and how they are supported and encouraged by the built environment. This emphasis will be particular to each organisation and will be driven by culture, which is such a special and unique element of any business. Culture and behaviour (of teams and individuals) is inextricably linked and the ideal workplace should really leverage this, encouraging behaviours that work well and supporting new, desired connections and habits.

In a fast paced, rapidly changing world, the spaces we inhabit have an important role to play, now more than ever. Whether at home, at work or at play, a well-designed physical environment goes a long way to supporting and nurturing our daily activities and interactions, no matter what the circumstances.
