Sydney’s additional 100kms of cycleways are just one element of ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ – but probably the most contentious one. As the planet’s energy crisis worsens, sustainable travel will become necessary before we know it, and given that we (supposedly) have the ideal climate for it, Sydney needs to follow the lead of cities like London, Paris and New York by offering the infrastructure and facilities that make cycling a more viable option for more people.

Given our obsession with workplace design at futurespace, we are very interested in the effects of this transition on the built environment. We find ourselves retro-fitting cycle storage, showers and extra change facilities for clients. And the subject is being raised more often in client briefings as employers take notice of a shift in attitude.

The bike lane discussion seems to have split Sydney-siders. Some deem the expense a waste and the planning flawed, while advocates are just as passionate about the need for a big picture transformation in Sydney’s eco-conscience.

Arguments aside, surely having more people on bikes can only be a good thing?
